Search engine optimization (SEO) is a critical component of attracting new leads, however many business owners and even marketers struggle to fully understand best practice when it comes to SEO. Here at Inbound Brew, we understand this issue so we’re here to help. Not only can you use our free plugin (LINK) to help you optimize blog posts as you’re writing them, but we also have some tips to help you improve SEO for your blog.

Here are 5 ways to make your blog SEO friendly:

1. Focus on Long-Tail Keywords

When writing blog posts, it’s important that you keep the blog posts conversational, and only focus on 1-2 keywords per post. Google and other search engines will actually penalize you if it looks like you’re forcing too many keywords. Instead, focus on a couple keywords to not only focus your post but to also attract the right kind of visitors. It’s most important to put your keywords in your title (but keep the title under 70 characters) and also at a normal pace throughout the actual blog post.

2. Use a Responsive Design

You may not be able to judge a book by it’s cover but you can certainly judge a website. Blogs that are responsive and user-friendly will look good on the screen of any device from a tablet to a phone or a desktop. This is essential for creating a unified user experience and also for SEO. Lastly, it is important to have a responsive website so it creates one URL, ensuring any inbound links won’t be scattered across different domains.

3. Optimize Your Images

Blog posts should always contain both text and images. Besides the fact that readers like visuals, search engines like them too! However it is important to remember that search engines look specifically for images with alt text, or short descriptions, for the images. These descriptions help search engines interpret the meaning of an image. Otherwise, search engines cannot interpret what the image means.

4. Include Meta Descriptions

Meta description is the additional text that appears on your search results that lets you know what the link is about. This is important because it give readers more information to help them decide whether or not your content is what they’re searching for. Meta descriptions should also use your keywords to ensure that search engines (and people) can identify you as a fitting search result.

5. Use canonical tags

Many SEO experts say you shouldn’t ever have duplicate content on your web pages, however sometimes it is necessary to share the same content twice. When this is the case, you should use canonical tags. These tags tell search engines which page of the duplicate content to index so that your content is not punished for appearing somewhere else on your website. You can put a page in canonical tags by:

  • Choosing the page that you want to be indexed
  • Writing down that URL
  • Go to the duplicate page(s) that should not be indexed
  • Insert this code in the <head> section: <link rel=”canonical” href=”INSERT INDEXED PAGE URL”/> of that page
